Destination Luxembourg: Moselle wine, a treasure to be discovered

Becoming more renowned, Luxembourg wines now take their place on the finest tables.

Between famous vineyards in Alsace and renowned wines from the German Moselle, Luxembourg’s wines have long had a hard time existing. With 3,160 acres of vines stretching over 42 km of hillsides along the Moselle between Schengen and Wasserbillig, Luxembourg is indeed a small producer with 6 million litres of wine in 2016 (0.03 % of world production). Yet it offers gems that delight wine-buffs, treasures waiting to be discovered! The remarkable soil is chalky to the north, clay loam to the south. The Moselle Valley faces south-west, with a micro-climate raising the temperature by 2°C. Ideal conditions for growing riverside vines (alias Müller-Thurgau), Pinot Gris, Blanc and Noir, Auxerrois, Riesling, Elbling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer. With ancestral know-how, Luxembourg vintners have developed wines with marked regional features, giving priority to whites. Elegant, cool, of real finesse, these wines of character are now highly rated at top international gourmet addresses. Lesser-known reds are gradually winning well-deserved recognition. Luxembourg is also known for its Crémant wines, sparkling and fresh. Finally, ‘‘late grape harvests’’, ‘‘ice’’ and ‘‘straw wines’’ are all worth discovering.

Luxembourg’s Wine Route is 42 km long, stretching from Schengen to Wasserbillig. It benefits from firstclass hillsides producing high-quality wines.
