Easily reached by tram, Luxembourg’s new National Library has been the pride of Luxembourgers since it opened. On Boulevard Kennedy in the Kirchberg neighbourhood, this building designed by architects Bolles+Wilson impresses for its elegance. It took 5 years to build the replacement of the city centre’s library and install its 1.8 million documents. A new library experience, much more modern and comfortable. The National Library collects, preserves and catalogues all publications produced in Luxembourg and those from abroad relating to the Grand-Duchy. It is thus the country’s main patrimonial, scientific and research library, spanning all areas of knowledge. It offers an ever-growing number of digital documents: 60 e-journals, 640,000 e-books and 390 databases. Its striking design includes shelving all placed perpendicular to large windows, allowing a flow of natural daylight to enter this warm, welcoming world. On 3 floors, it offers a vast reading-room and a library with unrestricted access to over 200,000 books. Modern, practical, it proposes ‘‘self-loan’’: with a ‘‘reader’’ card, borrowers can scan the bookdesired on a terminal. Another innovation, books can be returned 24/7 to a deposit box outside the building. Opening hours have been extended: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays to Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Designed as a ‘‘hybrid’’ location, the ‘‘BNL’’ also hosts a media-library with sofas, TVs, DVDs, audio headsets and 20,000 audiovisual documents. Plus a family room, audio rooms ideal for learning a new language, a music room with a piano, work spaces, shared or private, for those needing to concentrate. A setting for cultural events, it holds regular lectures, exhibitions etc. on diverse topics, and proposes several workshop formulas for school children and teachers. A café and terrace complete this cosy venue. Finally, a pleasant surprise, culture is within everyone’s reach, and free of charge for Luxembourgers.
