Luxembourg Pays: Her Majesty, Mother nature!

With its medieval towns, dense forests and lush valleys, Luxembourg unveils unsuspected charms…

Modest in size, but with a big heart… At the heart of Europe, the ‘‘land of three borders’’ is certainly among the smallest (2,586 sq.km), but prized for its exceptional heritage and culture. Do not think that Luxembourg boils down to its capital or global financial centre: it has so much more to offer!

Many castles from a rich medieval past are scattered in all four corners. Built from the 11th to 13th centuries, the Château de Vianden, to the north, is one of Europe’s best preserved medieval castles, offering a clear view of the valley of L’Our. On a rocky hillside above the town of Clervaux, the château bearing its name is also worth a visit.

Yet castles, however majestic, are not the sole attraction. Luxembourg is a great place to explore. In the Diekirch district, forests flirt with rivers. From one charming village to the next, you find simplicity and authenticity. Picturesque hiking trails in a timeless countryside.

To the east, the Moselle valley unfurls medieval fortifications on hillsides, churches, basilicas. The Mullerthal trail, or ‘‘Luxembourg’s little Switzerland’’, consists of three loops covering 112 kilometers of varied scenery including impressive rock formations. A unique biotope of which Luxembourg can be proud!

Despite significant demographic growth, it preserves its natural balance. For several years, developers, architects and urban planners have built ‘‘smart’’ towns respecting the environment. In the south-west, the avant-garde commune of Differdange will be one of ‘‘100 smart and climatically neutral towns’’ by 2030. The government has also unveiled its carbon-free construction strategy, aiming for a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Hillsides, vines and cellars

The Moselle valley is a hotbed of viticulture. Pleasure for both eyes and palate. For centuries, endless rows of vines, surrounded by green vales. The region is renowned for its grape varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and L’Auxerrois, notably used in the production of Crémant Luxembourgeois, a cool sparkling wine of finesse. Vineyard estates and local cellars welcome visitors wanting to discover the secrets of vinification and taste the finest vintages.
