An ode to escapism

Three questions for Philippe Capron, architect for the Sofitel Luxembourg Le Grand Ducal, entrusted with new decor for the hotel’s rooms and suites.
What was the goal behind this renovation?

To completely transform the atmosphere in the rooms. The aim was to make them warmer while preserving their elegance and comfort. They now offer warm, light colours (beige, blond, ochre) and feature more wood with rosewood furnishings. Other items have been added to reinforce this warm ambiance such as leather bedheads or fitted wool carpets.

What were your sources of inspiration?

The main inspiration for this renovation came from Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The goal was to create an atmosphere conducive to travel and escapism, as illustrated by several subtle details: leather recalls the pilot’s helmet, a shelf has been designed in the shape of an aircraft’s wing, the carpet has a dune-like pattern, evoking the desert. All these elements invite occupants of the new rooms and suites to embark on a real voyage.

Which new furnishings stand out most?

The minibar is the centrepiece of this new decor. It is hidden in a traveller’s trunk in vintage style that I designed myself, diverting it from its usual use so that it becomes a central feature in each room. It also contains a coffee machine, a kettle, cups and other amenities. Design lies at the heart of my work, and it is what I love most of all.
